THE TOPICS
. Lighthouse will be run like an afterschool program, but the difference is, it will be designed to teach students life skills that may or not be taught in the schools. The topics are endless! Character building, such as the importance of keeping your word, integrity, honesty, problem-solving, compassion, empathy, etc., positive mental attitude and how it affects your being, to grown-folks-skills, such as how to buy a car, a house, what is a credit score and how to have a high one, setting a budget, stewardship, writing a check, having a checking and savings account, and everything in between. Safety- in terms of social media, aware of surroundings, who to trust, not putting yourself in dangerous situations regarding abduction and drugs. Emotional intelligence, such as conflict management, using your words to solve the problem, reading body language, just to name a few. The topics will come from teachers, parents, the students themselves, and our staff. These are examples and some of the first lessons that will be taught.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE...
Having Lighthouse become non proft and FREE just makes sense. But NOTHING is free in this world. We need donations, volunteers, a place to meet, cars to pick the kids up and get them to their meeting place, leadership coaches, and so on, and so on. It can be overwhelming! BUT, GOD will provide. This will all be for HIS Glory, and with Him in charge, we will see a revival of these young kids that will become LEADERS FOR JESUS.
THE JR TUTOR PROGRAM
Grades are a big deal! Learning how to prepare for tests now will only help students when they get to high school. The Jr Tutor Program falls right into our philosophy of leadership. Example: if your child excels in Math, then he can help one or two kids who are struggling with math. If your child needs hellp in a subject, someone in the room will be able to help her learn the assignment.
There have been many studies lately that show peer tutoring is the most effective way of turning grades around quickly.
Students will be coached on how to tutor in a positive manner, how to praise and how to give feedback in a positive way. Through pratical application, they will learn so many lessons regarding leadership.
